For the fourth time the International Heritage Photographic Experience (IHPE) has been held in Austria, organised by the Bundesdenkmalamt (Federal Office for the Care and Protection of Monuments). This year’s subject was the same as for Austria’s European Heritage Day 2009: “Creativity and Innovation”. Therefore it refers also to the topic of this years theme of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation. The competition was prepared in cooperation with the Graphische (Federal Training and Research Institute for Graphic Arts and Media). Children and young people were given the chance to visit Vienna’s Hofburg and get to know places which are not open for public in general. A warm “thank you” to all participant teams of all organisations who made the annual IHPE a story of success: Burghauptmannschaft Österreich, Wiener Hofmusikkapelle and Hofburg Congress Center. The enthusiasm of the young photographers for the historical building complex of Vienna’s Hofburg Palace was noticeable every moment. Up to 1918, the Imperial Palace was the center of the vast empire of the Habsburg dynasty. They developed the area from the “Old Palace”, dating from the thirteenth century, to the most recent part, dating from the time around 1900. The richness of ideas and the variety of different styles of the complex can also be seen in the different visions. The first picture was taken in the so called “Gips-Keller”. The cellar of the Hofburg hauses a unique collection of plaster models, which were used as sketches for the sculptures and magnificent buildings of Vienna’s Ringstrasse done by renowned artists of the age of historicism. The second picture presents the cupola of the so called Michaelertrakt, the Michaeler range which was reconstructed at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The competition proves that children and young people are interested in cultural heritage and facing the possibility of seeing and arranging their own environment in different and exciting ways.
