OUR HANDS ARE THERE FOR A REASON The theme of Slovene Photographic Experience 2009 was arts and crafts. Crafts are activities connected to different parts of cultural heritage, namely material, immaterial and live heritage. They are strongly connected to the everyday life of the past as well as the present and represent an important part of cultural heritage of a certain environment. Researching arts and crafts is very interesting since we can explore different areas, such as how the products are made, where does material come from, what are the products used for, how products vary from region to region, how the making of the product developed and how the use may have changed over time. All this is bringing attention to lost knowledge and it ensures preservation of the crafts in the future. We consider as crafts all those which have been preserved, revived and also newly created, such as pottery, wickerwork, weaving, blacksmith, carpentry, shoemaking, ropery, candlemaking and many others. In Slovenia there is a wide variety of crafts and they differ from one region to another in the materials used and the range of certain craft in a particular region. The photographs entered in this year’s Photographic Experience show the variety of arts and crafts in Slovenia and represent an important document of all the activities still alive among the craftsmen.
