The Estonian Heritage Society organises the International
Heritage Photographic Experience in Estonia for the third
consecutive year. We were very pleased that this year
the number of participants grew considerably and the
competition attracted attention also outside the capital city
Tallinn. Participants came also from Võsu, Kohtla Järve, Võru,
Pärnu and Viljandi. Young people, sometimes supervised and
advised by teachers, sometimes on their own, took pictures
of heritage objects in their neighborhood and noticed both
urban and rural architecture that is typical to their towns
and villages. Not everything that the young photographers
noticed was nice and brilliant – a number of photographs
depicted neglected farmhouses, broken doors and windows
and a mouldy swimming pool in Kohtla-Järve that has fallen
into awful disrepair, but is still used by local schoolchildren
for training. Yet, a lot of joy and pride could be noticed in the
pictures depicting old archways and narrow streets, winding
park alleys, churches and benches sunken into the greenery.
The youngest participant was a 13-year-old student from the
Collegium Educationis Revaliae. It was a challenge to pick out
two photographs to be published in the common catalogue, the
choice was wide and extremely interesting. The International
Photographic Heritage Experience is a good opportunity to
attract the interest of young people and introduce them to the
values of cultural heritage. |
