The latest EPIM 09 competition has met with tremendous
success in Switzerland – especially in and around Zurich, where
many participants offered a fascinating take on the region’s
cultural diversity. The material received reveals an interesting
evolution in the way our everyday environment is handled
and the manner in which it is perceived and photographed.
Participants appear to have found contemporary architecture
and urban sprawl particularly intriguing and challenging, which
has given rise to some riveting photography.
In a world permanently on the move, it is fascinating to
observe the material submitted by the winners of the 2009
competition and the approach they have taken to their
personal environments. The top prize went to a picture of the
town of Uster, Canton Zurich, which conveys the creeping
urbanisation that is impacting Switzerland’s towns. It offers a
striking contrast between the idealised rural landscape and
the urban sprawl generated by residential development,
both detached and grouped. The second prize is a photo of
part of Stadelhofen station in Zurich, which was designed by
a renowned architect and is frequented predominantly by
commuters from neighbouring towns.
For the second year running the submissions of the 2009
winners, Swiss and European, are due to be projected in a
public place during the 13th Journées photographiques de
Bienne festival (4–27 September 2009). This collaboration spurs
us on to develop the EPIM competition in Switzerland and
attract even more children, as well as young photographers in
the making. |
