Since 1997, the Netherlands has participated with especial
enthusiasm in the International Photographic Experience. Each
year, the unique vision children have of historical monuments
and the way they photograph these, continues to surprise.
Often, it is their creativity and ingenuity that distinguishes them
f rom adults.
The Open Monumentendag Foundation in the Netherlands
has a particular interest in this international project. After all, it
can be difficult to stimulate children’s enthusiasm for cultural
heritage. The photographic experience achieves this superbly.
Moreover, placing the competition in a larger context, a
European dimension, makes it even more educational and
exciting. The publication of these young people’s photos in this
collection and their presentation in an exhibition has therefore
met with considerable applause.
Young people between the age of 10 and 18 were encouraged
to take pictures for this contest. Purpose was to select a particular
historical site and take exciting pictures of it and to photograph
it in an exciting new way. Two winners were chosen by a panel
of experts.
European Heritage Day will be held for the twenty-third time
in the Netherlands in 2009. With as many as 900,000 visitors, it
is one of the largest cultural events in the country. In addition
to the photographic experience, the Open Monumentendag
Foundation organises a range of innovative projects that draw
attention to our common heritage in Europe.
