The Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation
for Monument Protection) has held its new youth photo
competition “Fokus Denkmal” (Focus Monument) for the
second time. By participating in “Fokus Denkmal”, young
people from Germany contribute to the IHPE (International
Heritage Photographic Experience). The motto of this year’s
photo competition is “Places of Enjoyment”, in line with the
theme of the “Tag des offenen Denkmals” (Monument Open
Day), the motto of which is “Historic Places of Enjoyment” in
2009. The winning pictures express a clear, but at the same
time offbeat interpretation of the theme “Places of Enjoyment”:
Nikolas Martin’s picture shows his friends, who are relaxing at a
birthday party on an old bridge and enjoying the beautiful day.
With her shot of Castle Luisium in Dessau, Sandra Schneider has
submitted a more abstract interpretation of the theme “Places
of Enjoyment”: the Luisium Castle and Park, part of the Dessau-
Wörlitz Gardens, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, are
still today “....a place of enjoyment for everyone who loves the
tranquility and beauty of nature and old classic buildings. Back
then it was also a place of enjoyment and relaxation, namely
for Princess Luise, the wife of Leopold III. Friedrich Franz of
Anhalt-Dessau, who had this park and castle built for her,” writes
Sandra.
The German Foundation for Monument Protection is the biggest
non-governmental organisation in Germany, which ensures the
preservation of architectural cultural heritage. Its ‘Monument
Open Day’ is the German contribution to the European
Heritage Days. The more than 4 million visitors annually only
serve to underline the wish of the people for its government
to continue with the preservation of endangered heritage
sites. The large number of participants in “Fokus Denkmal” also
proves that youngsters in particular have a great interest in their
architectural surroundings |
