The Adventist College in Cidade Nova, in Manaus, Brazil, has
had some exciting moments this academic year. One of them
was to participate once again in the International Heritage
Photographic Experience. On behalf of our teachers, staff and
pupils, we would like to thank the organisers of the project and
congratulate them on the initiative.
This year our participants were studying the 9th course, that is,
completing basic education, and were led by our teacher Jerry
de Araújo Vale.
We are therefore presenting to the world two monuments
of which the people of the Amazon region are very proud:
the architectural ensemble of Alfândega and the Benjamin
Constant steel bridge.
The first of these was opened in 1906 and is eclectic in style
with mediaeval and Renaissance elements. It is the world’s first
prefabricated building, built of blocks of what appear to be
bricks which were imported from England. It is a reproduction
of London buildings of the early 20th century. It was listed as
a heritage site by the Institute for the National Historic and
Artistic Heritage of Brazil in 1987.
The bridge was built between 1892 and 1895 and all of its
pieces, too, were imported from England.
We in the Amazon region are proud to form part of this
enormous country, full of historical, cultural and natural riches.
And showing Amazonia to the world is extremely important,
because as well as playing an enormous role in the world
ecological balance, the region is also an extremely rich source
of raw materials and contains beautiful historic buildings.
In Brazil there is room for everyone. Every colour, every race. This
mixture is what makes us such a rich society, such a beautiful
society! |
